The lack of affordable housing in the large cities continues to be a concern, despite the commitments of the Government of Alberta to make more housing available. The demand for affordable housing is simply greater than the supply, and increasing the supply is a cornerstone of the municipal and provincial plans to increase access to affordable housing. The City of Calgary has asked the provincial government to institute personal and corporate income tax, or provincial property tax incentives to encourage the private sector to become a mainstream player in the development of affordable housing, and to investigate financing options to facilitate the private sector's acquisition of land for affordable housing development.
- What commitment will you make to the construction of more affordable housing in cities?
- What measures would you be willing to introduce to encourage the participation of the private sector in the development of more affordable housing in the large cities?
