Answer: All Albertans should feel safe in their communities whether they live in our major urban centres or in rural areas. This involves not only investing in policing, but also investing in our communities – addressing social determinants of crime such as poverty, mental illness, and addictions are an essential piece of this equation.
Alberta has long been ranked among the lowest in the country for the number of police officers per 100,000 population; funding has been a major hurdle in overcoming this unfortunate statistic in our largest centres. The Alberta Liberals would initially increase the current police funding formula for our largest urban centres to at least $20 per capita, and revamp the police funding formula for communities with populations from 5,001 to 20,000 and from 20,001 to 100,000. We will also encourage and adequately fund community policing initiatives to provide a higher level of neighbourhood security.
The Alberta Liberal plan also includes significant investments in preventative health and mental illness so we can start addressing social determinants of crime.
