Alberta's NDP response to Question 06

Question: What is your plan to approach and manage the competing interests for water resources in the Calgary region?

Answer: The Conservatives want to change the Water Act to expand the market for water across the province – selling water to the highest bidder – while they have cut water monitoring by 25% since 2007. The NDP would stop the expansion of water markets and ensure water is not treated as a for-profit commodity. A full role for the participation of all affected stakeholders in reaching decisions is important but water crosses municipal boundaries and the province does have a duty to steward water in a comprehensive way that keeps human and ecosystem needs the priority for allocations.
