PC Alberta response to Question 01

Question: How will you recognize the needs of Calgary and Edmonton, and how do you see this reflected in a new legislative framework for the cities?

Is the Municipal Government Act adequate to meet the needs of the large cities?

Would you prefer city charters or other legislative remedies to address this issue?

Answer: We recognize that the MGA is outdated and does not reflect the changing dynamics of our cities like Calgary and Edmonton. Our party supports the inclusion of city charters into legislation to recognize the uniqueness of our major cities. Charters are a useful step toward establishing respectful consultative partnerships between the province and Alberta’s largest municipalities that are specific to each city’s particular circumstances. Discussions with both Calgary and Edmonton on city charters will be a part of the extensive review of the MGA, which we will begin immediately after the election.
