Ric McIver's response to Question 5

Question 5: What will you do to improve campaign finance and disclosure legislation for Calgary and other municipalities in Alberta?

The province recently made legislative changes aimed at strengthening election finance and contribution disclosure rules. The changes take into account many of the 101 recommendations on improving provincial election laws from Alberta’s Chief Electoral Officer – including disclosure rules so that provincial parties or constituency associations will now have to identify any donors who contributes $250 or more.

I have never felt the legislation was as good as it should be. Many elected people from all sizes of municipalities have told me so as well. I am open to changes, but will only do them with municipalities – including cities – at the table. We should be able to get this right but only if we really listen and think things through in partnership. The public deserves nothing less.
