Alberta Liberal response to Question 4

Question:  Will you restore Provincial funding to the Arts Commons?

Question:  How will you support arts, culture and recreation in Calgary?

Answer:  In our current election platform Alberta Liberals have not budgeted specifically to restore provincial funding to the Arts Commons. This was a funding commitment made by the PCs, and they reneged on it. While an Alberta Liberal government will seek to restore that funding in the future, we suggest that the PCs and their Calgary-Buffalo candidate from the arts community should be made to answer for this decision.

To be clear, Alberta Liberals are still offering substantial support to the creative community even in these challenging economic times. We know that every dollar invested in the arts creates an estimated $12 of economic activity. That’s why we have committed to double the funding for the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, from $26.5 million to $53 million to ensure that Provincial Arts Service Organizations (PASOs) are fully supported and funded. Alberta Liberals have also shown leadership in fostering and sustaining an indigenous Alberta arts community with a $5 million commitment this election. We will also introduce an endowment fund for the arts when Alberta returns to surplus budgets to ensure long-term, reliable support for the creative community.
