Alberta Liberal response to Question 8

Question:  In this situation (re: Harmony Beef Slaughterhouse) how would you protect the quality of life for citizens in Northeast Calgary?

This is really a continuation of question 7 and speaks to the need for a binding mechanism to resolve concerns or disputes when adjacent municipalities are not willing to approach development from a common regional perspective. While the Municipal Government Board is where such an inter-municipal dispute can be adjudicated, Alberta Liberals believe that the legislation and impending regulations regarding regional planning should really address situations like this. Just because a municipality has exclusive jurisdiction over an issue doesn’t mean that it should just be able to ignore the impact on neighbouring jurisdictions. That’s really the essence of regional planning, and it’s why growth management boards are so important.
