Green Party of Alberta response to Question 2

Question:  How would your party provide long-range, sustainable, predictable capital funding for Alberta’s large cities?

Answer:  It is clear that Alberta’s (indeed, Canada’s) cities do not have sufficient powers to meet the demands placed on them. The major cities in Canada should have more extensive taxing powers in particular for the large, transportation infrastructure projects which are so badly needed. The Green Party of Alberta – reborn only in 2011 – does not yet have policy on exactly how this should be accomplished but, at a minimum, the provincial government should make multi-year funding commitments sufficient to provide for the building of these projects.

Regarding transportation specifically, Greens would always put highest priority on public transit projects, such as the above-mentioned Green LRT line. Indeed Greens would make all funding of municipal and other projects province-wide subject to a sustainability test.
