Wildrose response to Question 3

Question:  What measures will you take to help ensure citizens are protected from future flood events along the Bow River?

Question:  What is your opinion on the proposed flood mitigation options for the Elbow River:
  1. Glenmore Reservoir Diversion Tunnel;
  2. The McLean Creek dry dam;
  3. The Springbank off-stream diversion and storage site and do you favour this project as a dry dam only or as a permanent reservoir?
Detail can be found here: http://www.calgary.ca/UEP/Water/Pages/Flooding-and-sewer-back-ups/Flood-Mitigation-Panel/Elbow-River-Flood-Mitigation-Options.aspx

Answer:  It was disappointing to see the PC government rush into the approval of the Springbank Dry Dam without taking the time to adequately consult with the City of Calgary officials and seemingly without properly weighing the true costs of that project and determining it will be adequate.

If, as critics contend, the Springbank Dry Dam will be two or three times as expensive as initially indicated and turn out to be only a half measure in the event of a serious flood, that would be terrible.

Wildrose is committed to working with the City of Calgary on development plans that protect residents and property. The government has the resources to plan for future flood events, but has done a poor job of mapping, providing clear information, and investing in flood mitigation.
